How we read markets.

02 · Global markets

Prices through the trading day.

Third-party market prices provided by TradingView. US index levels are shown through exchange-traded funds that track each index; their prices follow the index but are not the index level itself.

Market prices are provided by TradingView and are not produced or verified by AM Nusantara. Prices of US-listed funds are delayed (marked “D”); currency and commodity prices may be indicative. Fund names are shown only to identify the price being tracked and are not a recommendation of any fund.

The FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI is not available through this service; Bursa Malaysia index data require a separate licence.

03 · Five lenses

What we look at, and why.

Each lens describes what to observe and which questions to ask. None is a forecast; together they form the context for the Observe stage of our investment approach.

01

Equity markets

Breadth, not just direction

An index level tells you how the largest companies did. Breadth, the share of companies taking part in a move, tells you whether the market as a whole agrees.

What we look at

  • How many companies are rising, not only how far the index moved
  • Whether returns come from earnings growth or from rising valuations
  • Which sectors lead, and whether leadership is broadening or narrowing

02

The economy

Composition, not just the headline

GDP summarises how fast the economy grew. What drives that growth, household spending, investment, exports or a single industry, shows how durable it is likely to be.

What we look at

  • The balance between domestic demand and exports
  • Whether growth is broad-based or concentrated in one sector
  • How the latest reading compares with the trend, not only with last year

03

Prices and interest rates

The cost of living and the cost of money

Inflation affects purchasing power and company margins; interest rates affect financing costs and valuations. Both influence each other, and both are set partly by forces outside Malaysia.

What we look at

  • The composition of inflation, especially energy and transport
  • Monetary policy decisions and the reasons given for them
  • Credit conditions for large companies compared with small ones

04

Currencies and capital flows

A return component and a transmission channel

For a cross-border investor, the exchange rate can add to a return or erase it. Currencies also move with global risk appetite, often at the same time as equities.

What we look at

  • The ringgit against the US dollar and against a basket of trading partners
  • Whether currency exposure is a deliberate decision or a by-product
  • How foreign portfolio flows respond to global stress

Official sources

05

Investment discipline

From observation to decision

Information becomes useful only when it is tested. Before capital is committed, assumptions should be challenged, the downside quantified and the reasoning documented.

What we look at

  • What evidence supports the thesis, and what would invalidate it
  • How sensitive the outcome is to rates, earnings or the currency
  • Which indicators will show that circumstances have changed

05 · Reading data with discipline

Five principles before any conclusion.

  • Separate observation from interpretationWhat a statistic says and what it may mean are different claims. We state the first with a source and label the second as a view.
  • Read direction as well as levelA strong reading that is weakening can matter more than a modest one that is improving.
  • Expect revisionsAdvance estimates are revised as more data arrive. Early figures are useful, but provisional.
  • Look for the common driverSignals that appear independent often share one cause. Counting them separately overstates the evidence.
  • Prefer the primary sourceWhere possible, we cite the statistical agency or central bank that produced a figure, with its date.
